Amateur Radio This Week: 2024.20   Leave a comment

This week, I did not do much on the radio at all. I have not even updated my logbooks from the last two weeks, so that’s on my to do list today.

I also need to get prepared for storm chasing. I will leave for Denver, CO, on Saturday, and the first day of chasing will be on Sunday, probably eastern Colorado or western Kansas. The Crown Vic is currently in the shop, so I can’t do much to prepare now, but I need to trace out a VHF antenna cable and see if I can find a 6 meter antenna.

Thank you for reading my post.

This week, I did make a few contacts on HF. I took a trip to Dallas and on the way home, I picked up two new counties southwest of Dallas. Now, I’m only missing like one county east of I-35 in Texas.

Outside of my travels, I have picked up a few Parks on the Air (POTA) stations on 20 meters while driving around town. I made a few in Albuquerque and Rio Rancho from the Crown Vic and a few in Socorro and Magdalena from the Malibu.

I checked into the Albuquerque SCAT Net a few times last week as well.

This week, I played around a bit and made a few contacts at parks, adding to my total number of “Parks on the Air”. I made all of my contacts on 20 meter SSB, but I did them from separate vehicles in different places, some on my way to the train in the morning and some in Socorro county riding out to Magdalena.

I finally uploaded all of my QSOs to Logbook of the World and to Parks on the Air, so those logs are finally up to date.

I checked into the Albuquerque SCAT Net a few times this week as well.

I’m running behind on my posting as I took a trip to Dallas. I may try to run a few counties today, or I may chase a storm, or both. Hopefully, there will be a few more contacts today.

This week has been relatively quiet in terms of my amateur radio participation. I was out of town all weekend, and I didn’t end up playing on the radio.

I checked into the Albuquerque SCAT Net a few times over the past week on VHF. Besides that, I spent some time on HF today along my commute from Magdalena back to Socorro and I worked about five parks and one DX station (Slovenia S51DX- I seem to work him often).

As it stands now, my NMQP log has been submitted, but I still need to update DX4Win and Logbook of the World. I’ll do that this weekend.

Thank you for reading my post.

This weekend was the NM QSO Party. Friday night, I prepared for the contest by clearing out my voice recorder app on my phone and then updating all of my logs and DX4Win.

Saturday morning, I got off to a late start. I started out the day by running Sandoval county on 20 meters near my house in the Crown Vic. I made 15 or so contacts and then headed south to Bernalillo.

In Bernalillo, I tried running both Bernalillo county and the Petroglyphs park. For whatever reason, it took me forever to get 15 contacts. I sat at the park for at least an hour, and finally got 15 and was ready to move on.

Valencia county had no such park. I sat in a Circle K parking lot for well over an hour, knocking out some contacts there. I also talked to another station that was located in Valencia county, and debated trying to meet up with them in person, but decided I was already far enough behind.

I stopped at the Sevilleta and ran the park and Socorro county. Once again, it took forever to get my fifteen contacts. I left the park and then stopped by NMT campus to mess around with something in my office.

I brought up a map of counties and saw that it would not be possible to make it to another county, regardless of which way I went before the contest ended. I decided instead to stay in Socorro and finish out the contest. By the end of the contest, conditions on 20 meters had improved drastically, and I made nearly 20 contacts in the last 15 or so minutes of the contest, including several stations in the Czech Republic, who was running their own contest.

My logbook has been updated, but I need to get my DX4Win log and submit the contacts.

Today, I spent the shuttle ride talking with the Tech Amateur Radio Association (TARA) Vice President. We are making plans for next year’s club, as we only have one more meeting for this year. I will update this blog with those plans later on.

This week, I took a trip from Rio Rancho, NM, down to Castroville, TX, to see the eclipse. Unfortunately, the skies were cloudy, but it still got dark, which was neat.

Along the way, I ran several counties, picking up three new ones. I missed one that I needed in West Texas, but I did get three new ones. I’m slowly chipping away at the counties I need. I will update the county map when I return home and get the contacts off my phone and into my logbook.

In my absence at NMT, the Tech Amateur Radio Association (TARA) was able to get a few things square with our budgeting. This was a relief, as I knew I would be out of town for the important meetings.

I didn’t spend a lot of time on the radio until the weekend. On Sunday, I participated in WPX from the Crown Vic. I made 30 contacts, all on 15 meters. I picked up D4C, a station in Japan, French Guiana, and quite a few others.

Once I arrived at my brother’s house, I got to see his station. I made several contacts in the contest on 20 meters. I may have picked up a park or two as well, but I can’t remember.

Today, I made a bunch of contacts on 20 meters driving around in Socorro in the Malibu. I picked up several more Parks on the Air (PotA) stations, as well as AO75GA. I checked into the “Looking at Victory” Bible net on 20 meters.

I still need to update my logbook and DX4Win, but I haven’t had a chance to do so.

This week, I made a few contacts to Parks on the Air stations. I tried to operate on several bands, but I think I only made contacts on 20 meters and 40 meters. I’m still getting used to the US- designation over the K- designation.

Besides stations at parks, I made a neat contact with an aeronautical mobile station, who was flying over the Midwest in a Boeing 737. I have only made a few contacts with commercial airlines over the years.

Other than that, I had a few checkins with the Albuquerque SCAT Net and one with the Caravan Club Net on Sunday evening.

This week, I did make a few contacts on HF. I worked a number of parks and a few on an OMISS Net (40 meters). I made some contacts from home and I made some from the Malibu, split across 20 meters and I think a few on 12 meters, but I’d have to check the logs again.

Through all the excitement, I picked up parks in DC and NH, which gets me Worked All States (Parks on the Air)!

Unfortunately, the strong winds over the past few days shredded my 6 m dipole. I never did make any contacts on it, so I still can’t verify whether the radio works on not. I’m not quite ready to take down the center mast to repair the 6 m antenna- this will probably be a summertime project.

This week, I was not very active, but I did make a few contacts on HF. I operated on 80 meters in an OMISS net, picking up three new OMISS numbers. I also made a contact or two on 12 meters. I can’t remember exactly where or when, but I did- I think Slovenia was one of them.

I checked into the Albuquerque SCAT Net a few times as well.

The Virginia QSO Party is this weekend, and I’d really like to work the Virginia Tech Amateur Radio Association 100th year anniversary special event station. I was president of that club when I was an undergraduate.
